Sandy has been a dedicated volunteer for nearly 18 years, since her best friend received care. She is also the Project Co-ordinator at her local quilt group, where talented individuals create special quilts that are donated to children in hospitals, those facing illness, struggling with mental health, or coping with loss. These beautiful quilts often accompany our memory box teddy bears gifted to children.
In 2020, Sandy received a call from Lorraine, a woman recently diagnosed with breast cancer. Isolating alone due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Lorraine had been given Sandy’s contact information to explore how she could get involved in quilting. Lorraine shared her experience:
“A friendly neighbour introduced me to quilting, and I was instantly hooked. The intense concentration felt like a form of living, waking meditation. I was inspired to create a heritage quilt with no pattern.“
Lorraine began crafting a stunning quilt but then shared:
“In the meantime, two things happened almost simultaneously. We were emerging from lockdown, and thanks to a new drug available through the NHS for breast cancer, I had outlived my three-year prognosis.”
Determined to make the most of her extended time, Lorraine entrusted Sandy and the team to complete the quilt she had started. They decided to raffle the finished quilt to support Cransley Hospice Trust and LOROS Hospice, as many of the quilters are based in Great Bowden and form the U3a group.
Sandy shared:
“Due to the size and nature of the quilt, I didn’t feel it was suitable for a child, so we came up with the idea to raise money for charity. This project took two years to complete, as it is hand-sewn and contains 12,000 pieces, each the size of a 10-pence coin. The quilt is king-size and machine washable with care.“
