“She Just Didn’t Want to be Forgotten”: Kyla Shares Her Family’s Story in Support of Tree of Lights

When Kyla’s mum, Tracey, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017, her family was devastated. A fit, active woman who loved jet skiing and scuba diving. She faced her eight-year battle with courage, accepting every challenge in her stride. But her biggest fear was simple: she didn’t want to be forgotten.

After multiple cancer diagnoses, Tracey was told in March 2025 that no further treatment options were available. She was adamant about spending her final days at Cransley Hospice, a place that quickly became a safe haven for her and her whole family.

From hospice staff sitting with Tracey to build Lego creations, to welcoming her beloved miniature schnauzer, Tilly, for visits, the care went far beyond medical support. Crucially, the team made her young grandchildren, Charlie and Elodie, feel completely at home.

“Charlie was literally showered with love,” says Kyla. “He kept asking to go back. The team gave the children cuddle bears, memory boxes, and even created fingerprint keepsakes with Mum’s fingerprints for Charlie to take home. They’re something he will treasure forever.”

Tracey celebrated her 50th birthday surrounded by family before passing away peacefully in November 2025. Her final words were to her grandson Charlie, telling him how much she loved him.

During her mother’s final stay, Kyla attended the hospice’s annual Tree of Lights service, a decision that brought unexpected comfort during her deepest grief.

“I walked up there sobbing my heart out, but seeing the outpouring of love from everyone there made me realise that I wasn’t alone on this journey,” Kyla reflects. “I’ll be attending every year now in Mum’s memory. I honestly don’t think I would have made it through without the support from Cransley.”
