During this year’s Dying Matters Awareness Week, led by Hospice UK, we’re encouraging open, honest conversations about death, dying, and bereavement.
Talking about dying matters
Dying Matters Awareness Week 2026
“I can sometimes feel the relief in the room when that conversation is had.”
We know these conversations aren’t always easy but they can bring comfort, clarity, and connection when it matters most. By talking with the people closest to us, we can begin to understand each other’s wishes, plan ahead, and feel more prepared for the future.
At Cransley Hospice Trust, we believe these moments of openness can help families feel more supported, more reassured, and less alone.
Did you know?
27% of people find it hard to talk about death with family or friends, and 30% bottle their feelings up. (Data from Hospice UK)
That’s because these conversations can feel uncomfortable, emotional, and sometimes even overwhelming. For many people, it’s simply not something we’ve grown up talking about. We might worry about saying the wrong thing, upsetting someone we love, or making it feel “too real.”
Sometimes, avoiding the conversation can feel like a way of protecting ourselves and each other but gently opening up can bring a different kind of comfort.
Conversations matter…
Planning ahead and talking about dying truly matters and it’s okay if it doesn’t feel easy at first.
Starting the conversation can be gentle and simple:
-Choose a calm, quiet moment.
-Begin gently, “I’ve been thinking about this lately…”
You could also refer to a story, article, or experience as a starting point. You don’t need to have the perfect words. Starting small can help these conversations feel easier with time.
